French National Costume |
Since I was young I have always been interested in historical & national costumes. As a ballet teacher I teach national dance so have plenty of national dance books full of pictures.
Adeline's costume is based on that from Villeneuve-les-Avignon, the Languedoc - Roussillon area in Southern France. The city was founded by Philippe Le Bel, where he built a castle, Fort Saint-Andre. The city is by the Rhone River.
Adeline's costume has a dress which comes to the ankle, it is green with white added at the bottom of the dress. The black apron is shorter than most national costumes, but it has bright colours embroidered into it. The collar is larger than normal which almost looks like a shawl. A bonnet is worn.
Bettina's costume is based on that from Odense, the third largest city in Denmark. It is the main city of the Island of Funen in South Denmark, 'Syddarmark'. The city was established & granted rights in 988 by permission of the German Emperor Otto III. It gained it's City Charter in 1355 & then became a municipal in 1970.
Bettina's costume is a red dress, with yellow stripes. Stripes were common with this costume. There is a small collar & long white apron. Bettina wears a bonnet as was custom with married women, who should not show their hair, once married.
