Florence Nightingale (1820 - 1910) was the founder of modern nursing and an English social reformer. This design is styled in Victorian dress and comes complete with a nursing cap and lamp. It is a perfect nurse's gift or part of a historical display.

Knitting Pattern

This is a knitted dress, arms & bonnet for a 12cm peg doll. The design is based on a Finnish National Costume, which comes complete with a bonnet.

The dress is knitted all in one, so the construction is minimal. Toy stuffing is not used. I have used fine liner pens to decorate the face & hair.

I have found knitting clothes for a peg doll much easier than trying to use fabric & glue, plus the pattern can be knitted really quickly. I always found fabric & glue very frustrating as a child.

Customers have told me that when they travel, they like to knit a peg doll with the national dress, so the little doll can travel with them.

The pattern is simple to follow & photos are included to help with construction.

Christmas Doll
This little doll is easy to knit and construct, as the body and head are knitted all in one. The arms are not stuffed, so overall, the doll is not fiddly to put together. This doll is perfect for a Christmas tree decoration or Christmas display. It is one of Edith Grace Designs' best sellers, and some customers have knitted this doll as a guardian angel.

This doll is 18cm tall and is dressed as a British Red Cross Nurse from WWI. The legs, body, and head are knitted all in one, and she wears a light blue dress with puffed sleeves. She has a collar and bonnet, and wears the distinctive nurses' apron with a red cross. I designed this pattern for the WWI 100-year remembrance in 2014. It has been knitted for WWI displays and as gifts for those who volunteer in the Red Cross.

It is 2014 & during this year, in the U.K., we are remembering & commemorating those who served in World War I, 1914 to 1918. Paul Cummins & Tom Piper designed Red Poppies & these were placed outside in the moat of the Tower of London. 888,246 were made, representing each English Military soldier who died during the conflict.

I visited the Tank Museum, Bovington, Dorset, U.K., in July 2014. There was a very poignant exhibition of life in the trenches. It was very moving & this is where I bought a book.

'The Backwash of War' by Ellen N. La Motte. 'The Human Wreckage of the Battlefield as Witnessed by an American Nurse'. She was one of many inspirational women nurses at that time. My mother is also a nurse, nursing is a true vocation for my mother. She is also a member of The Red Cross & recently received her 20 years of service 'Red Cross Medal'. All this was the inspiration I needed to design Clara!

In 2012, my family & I visited the Florence Nightingale Museum at St. Thomas' Hospital, London, U.K. It was not until I visited this that I realised what an influence Florence had on nursing. This photo was a postcard I bought from the museum & what I have based my design of Florence on.

Florence Nightingale in the Military Hospital at Scutari - 1855
Florence Nightingale (1820 - 1910) came from a rich & upper-class family from Great Britain. She was born in Florence, Italy, hence her name!

Florence was the founder of modern nursing & was best known for her work in the Crimean War as 'The Lady with the Lamp'. In 1860, she laid the foundation for a professional nursing school at St. Thomas' Hospital, London, U.K.

Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale was awarded the Royal Red Cross Medal by Queen Victoria in 1883.
